LAHORE:
Punjab witnessed one of the biggest traffic enforcement crackdowns in its history as officials seized more than 12,000 vehicles and issued over 50,000 challans in just 24 hours, collecting a record Rs. 6.3 crore in fines.

The operation, jointly carried out by Punjab Police and the provincial transport authorities, spanned all major districts, including Lahore, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Multan, and Gujranwala.

Why This Massive Crackdown?

Authorities said the campaign was launched after a surge in:

  • Unregistered motorcycles and vehicles

  • Helmet and seat belt violations

  • Wrong-way driving

  • Over-speeding

  • Vehicles without number plates

  • Commercial vehicles lacking fitness certificates

Officials noted that a major share of seized vehicles included motorcycles driven without documentation or proper registration.

The goal is safer roads — not punishing people,” an official stated, emphasizing that the operation aims to bring long-term discipline to Punjab’s roads.

Rs. 6.3 Crore in Fines — In Just 24 Hours

More than 50,000 challans were issued during the blitz, making this one of the highest single-day collections in Punjab. Authorities believe heavy penalties will force habitual violators to comply with traffic rules.

Public Reaction Mixed

The large-scale crackdown sparked strong reactions:

  • Many praised the government for prioritizing traffic safety.

  • Others complained about long queues at checkpoints and alleged that enforcement teams became overly strict.

Social media also buzzed with images of seized vehicles parked in long rows across multiple districts.

Crackdown Will Continue

A Punjab Police spokesperson confirmed that this was only the first phase of the drive. More operations are planned in the coming days.

Citizens have been advised to:

  • Keep vehicle documents updated

  • Wear helmets and seat belts

  • Ensure number plates are legal and visible

  • Avoid over-speeding and dangerous driving

Punjab’s government says strict enforcement is essential to reducing road accidents and improving traffic discipline across the province.
