At least 27 people were injured in Lahore after clashes between students and the college’s security team, followed by confrontations with police, during protests over an alleged on-campus rape of a female student, rescue officials confirmed on Monday.
The protests erupted after a security guard was arrested when reports of the alleged rape circulated on social media. Police stated that an investigation was underway, although no formal complaint had been lodged as the victim’s family had not come forward.
Outraged students took to social media and organized demonstrations outside several colleges. One of the protests escalated into a violent confrontation at Hafeez Centre Punjab College Campus, where students clashed with security personnel, leaving 27 injured. One student was seriously hurt and transferred to Services Hospital.
Investigation Underway
Deputy Inspector General (Operations) Faisal Kamran, addressing a press conference, revealed that the police were working to locate the alleged victim and her family. “So far, claims related to the alleged rape could not be verified,” he stated. Despite searching hospital records and CCTV footage, no evidence had been found.
Kamran emphasized that the police were in constant communication with both the students and college administration, aiming to manage the situation peacefully. He reassured that any new evidence would lead to immediate legal action.
Punjab Education Minister Vows Justice
Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat met with protesting students, promising swift action if the allegations were proven. “We will not hesitate to seal the college or revoke its registration if necessary,” Hayat declared, also advising police to avoid violence against demonstrators.
The Punjab government has since suspended the registration of Punjab College for Women, pending further investigation.
Conflicting Statements
While students continue to press for justice, the Punjab Group of Colleges issued a statement refuting the allegations, citing a “thorough and impartial” investigation by law enforcement. They labeled the social media claims as false and reaffirmed their commitment to security.
Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari expressed grief over the incident but noted that no formal police report had been filed yet. “CM Maryam Nawaz is closely monitoring the situation, and anyone with verified information should share it with the authorities,” she urged.
Rising Sexual Violence
This incident has further highlighted the growing issue of sexual violence in Punjab. According to a 2023 report by the Sustainable Social Development Organisation, cases of violence against women have risen sharply, with Lahore recording 1,464 cases. The increasing number of incidents has sparked widespread concern, with advocates calling for stronger protection measures.
As investigations continue, authorities face mounting pressure to deliver justice and ensure the safety of students on campus.
