Five children lost their lives across Balochistan, while four people died in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa over the past day as monsoon rains, fueled by the remnants of cyclonic storm Asna, continued to cause widespread devastation across the country, officials confirmed on Tuesday.
In Balochistan, the total number of fatalities since July 1 has reached 39, including 19 children, according to Younus Mengal, head of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority’s (PDMA) control room. Mengal reported that the latest deaths occurred on Monday in three separate incidents. Two brothers drowned in flash floods in Zhob District, while two children from Khuzdar District’s Tootak area passed away after falling into a dam. Another minor drowned in a flash flood in Kech District.
Mengal emphasized that a new spell of rain entered Balochistan a day ago, affecting 22 districts and expected to continue until tonight. Eleven districts have been declared calamity-hit, with ongoing relief and rescue operations.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, four people succumbed to rain-related incidents as monsoon showers persisted. The relentless downpour has left significant damage across the region, with houses destroyed, crops submerged, and infrastructure severely impacted.
From July 1 to September 1, Balochistan alone has seen 17 injuries, the complete destruction of 895 houses, and partial damage to over 14,000 others. The devastation extends to over 111,400 affected people, seven damaged bridges, 74 kilometers of destroyed roads, and seven impaired medical health units. Agriculture has also been heavily impacted, with 58,830 acres of crops affected and 373 livestock lost.
Authorities have intensified relief efforts, with holidays for PDMA and other government employees suspended to manage the crisis. The ongoing rain spell continues to threaten lives and livelihoods, leaving the nation bracing for further impacts as the monsoon season persists.
