A woman police officer in Karachi has been suspended for filming a TikTok video while on duty and inadvertently disclosing her team’s location, according to a notification issued by Sindh Police on Wednesday.
Police Constable Maria Gill, stationed at Gizri Police Station in District South, Karachi, was suspended immediately due to “improper and irresponsible behavior towards the performance of official duties,” which resulted in negligence and dereliction of duty, as per the notification obtained by Dawn.com.
In the video, which was reviewed by Dawn.com, Gill is heard saying: “Hello guys, Assalamoalikum. Today, I am posted for duty at the Mai Kolachi Road outside Bahria College.”
She then points to several other police officers seated at a bus stop and mentions, “As you can see, there’s a heavy police presence here.” One of the officers is seen waving at the camera. Gill also shows her motorcycle parked nearby and invites viewers, saying, “Whoever wants to meet me, you can come here and meet me. I am posted on duty here today.”
The notification, signed by Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) South Zone Syed Asad Raza, stated that Gill would undergo a counseling session conducted by the Station House Officer Women South Zone. Additionally, she will be reassigned to the Police Headquarters South Zone to attend daily roll calls and parades. Despite the suspension, she will continue to draw her pay and allowances as per the rules.
DIG South Raza emphasized the seriousness of the incident, stating, “The police is a professional organization, and no one can be allowed to engage in such irresponsible acts.” He added that a report on Gill’s actions has been requested from the senior superintendent of police.
This incident follows a similar case in July, where a policeman in Chiniot was suspended for facilitating a transgender person in making a TikTok video in the SHO office, which had also gone viral on social media.
