Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg was detained by Danish police on Wednesday during a protest at Copenhagen University against the ongoing situation in Gaza and Israel’s occupation of the West Bank. The demonstration was organized by Students Against the Occupation, a pro-Palestinian student group.
According to the organizers, Thunberg was among six people detained after approximately 20 protesters blocked the entrance to a university building, with three individuals entering the premises. Thunberg, who is not a student at Copenhagen University, was later released, as reported by Danish media. The Danish daily Ekstra Bladet captured video footage showing her leaving a police station.
Thunberg, known globally for her environmental activism and her campaign against man-made climate change, has increasingly voiced support for the Palestinian cause. In May, she stated that such protests “should be everywhere.”
A video shared by the student group showed police officers leading Thunberg and other detainees into a police van, some with their hands tied behind their backs. Thunberg was seen wearing a scarf featuring the traditional Palestinian keffiyeh pattern, a symbol often associated with pro-Palestinian solidarity.
Kristian Cedervall Lauta, Prorector of Education at Copenhagen University, indicated that the university may consider disciplinary action against students involved in the protest, though Thunberg is not affiliated with the institution.
