Islamabad — Pakistan’s recent spate of internet shutdowns has caused significant disruption to the nation’s economy, with business losses soaring beyond Rs 1.3 billion. The extended outages, which have affected various sectors including e-commerce, finance, and technology, have raised serious concerns about the long-term impacts on Pakistan’s economic stability and growth.
According to industry reports, the shutdowns, implemented in response to various security concerns and political unrest, have severely hampered daily business operations. E-commerce platforms have faced interruptions in transactions, financial institutions have struggled with online banking services, and tech companies have experienced delays in project deliveries.
“These shutdowns have not only disrupted our daily operations but have also led to a loss of customer trust,” said Aisha Khan, a spokesperson for an e-commerce company based in Karachi. “We’ve seen a significant drop in sales and customer engagement, which has directly impacted our revenue.”
The Pakistan Business Council (PBC) has urged the government to consider the economic ramifications of these shutdowns, stressing that such measures could deter investment and affect the country’s international business reputation. “While we understand the need for security measures, it’s crucial to balance them with economic considerations. The costs of these disruptions are becoming unsustainable for many businesses,” said PBC Chairman Ahmed Malik.
Economic analysts warn that continued internet disruptions could lead to broader economic consequences, including slower GDP growth and increased unemployment in sectors heavily reliant on digital infrastructure. The business community is calling for more transparent and targeted approaches to managing security concerns without compromising economic stability.
As the situation develops, both the government and business leaders are expected to engage in discussions to find a solution that addresses security needs while minimizing economic damage. For now, many businesses are grappling with the financial fallout of the internet shutdowns, hoping for a swift resolution to prevent further losses.
