Islamabad – On Wednesday, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, Alexei Overchuk, arrived in Islamabad for a two-day visit, accompanied by a high-level delegation. Overchuk was warmly received at the airport by Pakistan’s Ambassador to Russia, Muhammad Khalid Jamali, and Additional Foreign Secretary (Europe) Shafqat Ali Khan.
During his visit, the deputy prime minister is scheduled to engage in extensive discussions with Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Mohammad Ishaq Dar, along with meetings with President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
This visit aims to further strengthen the growing bilateral ties between Pakistan and Russia. The two nations have been focusing on expanding cooperation, particularly in the energy sector, following the roadmap set during the 4th meeting of the Committee for Development of a Roadmap for Engagement with Russia, held on July 19, 2024.
Energy cooperation remains a key area of focus in the talks. Both countries are working on a three-pronged strategy involving the procurement of crude oil, the import of liquefied natural gas (LNG), and the development of gas infrastructure in Pakistan. Last year, Pakistan successfully imported its first shipment of 100,000 metric tons of crude oil from Russia, marking a significant milestone in their partnership.
The discussions during Overchuk’s visit are expected to build on these achievements and pave the way for stronger economic and strategic collaboration between the two nations.
