Mel Gibson’s long-awaited sequel to The Passion of the Christ is finally set to begin filming in 2025. Titled The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection, the film will focus on the events following the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. According to reports from Consequence and Italpress, Gibson is currently in Malta, scouting potential filming locations, and discussions are already underway with local authorities.

This sequel has been in development for several years, with Gibson first announcing the project in 2016. Jim Caviezel, who played Jesus in the original 2004 film, is expected to reprise his role. Caviezel has spoken enthusiastically about the sequel, calling it “the biggest film in history” in a 2018 interview.

Gibson hinted at a more ambitious plot for the sequel in a 2022 interview, describing it as having a “sci-fi” element. This suggests the film will explore different realms and timelines, contrasting with the original, which was celebrated for its raw portrayal of Christ’s final hours.

The original The Passion of the Christ was a massive box office success, grossing over $600 million globally and becoming one of the highest-grossing R-rated films of all time. Despite Gibson’s personal controversies, his 2016 war film Hacksaw Ridge garnered multiple Oscar nominations, marking his return to mainstream filmmaking.

As The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection edges closer to production, fans are eagerly awaiting further updates on this much-anticipated sequel.
