Islamabad, October 2, 2024 – In a significant move to bolster energy cooperation, Pakistan and Iran have announced the formation of a joint task force aimed at advancing the long-awaited gas pipeline project connecting the two countries. The decision was made during a high-level meeting in Islamabad, attended by officials from both governments.
The pipeline, often referred to as the Iran-Pakistan (IP) gas pipeline, is designed to transport natural gas from Iran’s South Pars field to Pakistan’s energy-starved markets. This project has faced multiple delays over the years due to geopolitical tensions, financial constraints, and security concerns.
The newly established task force will focus on resolving outstanding issues, including financing, infrastructure development, and regulatory approvals. Officials from both sides expressed optimism that the collaboration would pave the way for the pipeline’s completion, which is expected to enhance energy security in Pakistan and foster economic ties between the two nations.
“We are committed to moving forward with this vital project, which will not only benefit our economies but also contribute to regional stability,” stated Pakistan’s Minister for Energy during a press briefing.
Iran’s Deputy Oil Minister echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the potential of the pipeline to provide much-needed gas to Pakistan while boosting Iran’s energy exports.
As both countries continue to face energy challenges, the joint task force signifies a renewed commitment to regional cooperation and economic partnership. Further meetings are expected in the coming weeks to outline specific steps for the project’s advancement.
The success of the IP gas pipeline could also set a precedent for future collaborations in energy and infrastructure between neighboring countries in the region.
