Guillermo Söhnlein, co-founder of OceanGate, the company known for building the Titanic-seeking submersible, has introduced a groundbreaking new venture called “Humans2Venus.” In an interview with Insider, Söhnlein revealed his ambitious plan to establish a colony that hovers above the scorching surface of Venus, with a goal of accommodating 1,000 people by the year 2050.
While the depths of the ocean are already challenging, Venus presents an even harsher environment. Despite being dubbed “Earth’s twin,” the planet’s thick sulfuric atmosphere causes a “runaway greenhouse effect,” resulting in surface temperatures reaching a staggering 900 degrees Fahrenheit.
Acknowledging the audacity of the idea, Söhnlein admitted that the proposal to journey to Venus would raise eyebrows both within and outside the space industry. However, he remains confident that the project is aspirational yet feasible, driven by his belief in the potential to achieve this remarkable feat by 2050.
