PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar confirmed on Tuesday that doctors have been granted access to former Prime Minister Imran Khan at Adiala Jail, following concerns raised by his party over his health.
According to Gohar, government-appointed medical specialists, including an ENT specialist, visited the incarcerated PTI leader after the party submitted a request to the interior ministry. This request was made as no party leader, family member, or lawyer had been allowed to meet Khan since October 3, despite his deteriorating health.
Gohar expressed relief over the visit, which came after the PTI called off a planned protest in Islamabad on Monday. The party decided to suspend the demonstration after receiving assurances that a medical expert would assess Imran Khan’s condition. The protest was intended to coincide with the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, which brought several international dignitaries to Islamabad under heavy security.
Earlier, the government had warned that PTI protesters would be dealt with harshly if they attempted any demonstrations during the summit. However, after negotiations, the authorities agreed to most of the PTI’s demands, including facilitating a medical checkup for Imran Khan and allowing party leaders to meet him.
Jemima Goldsmith Urges Imran’s Release
Meanwhile, Jemima Goldsmith, the former spouse of Imran Khan, has voiced serious concerns about his treatment in prison and called for his release. In a statement posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), she highlighted the increasingly harsh conditions under which Khan is being held.
Goldsmith claimed that Pakistan’s authorities had cut off all visits to Imran Khan by his family and lawyers and postponed his court hearings. She also mentioned that his weekly phone calls to their sons, Sulaiman and Kasim Khan, had been stopped since September 10, in violation of a court order.
“He is now completely isolated, in solitary confinement, literally in the dark, with no contact with the outside world,” she stated, raising concerns for his safety and well-being.
Goldsmith also pointed out that members of Khan’s family, including his sisters Uzma and Aleema Khan, as well as his nephew, have been detained as part of what she described as an ongoing campaign against the PTI and its supporters.
“We are calling for Imran Khan’s release, the release of his family members, and for the re-establishment of his sons’ contact with their father,” Goldsmith emphasized, stressing the urgency of the situation.
