Lahore, October 16, 2024 – In a controversial statement today, Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Sardar Usman Buzdar dismissed the rape allegations made by a student of Lahore College for Women University (LCWU), calling them “false” and “baseless.”
The CM, addressing a press conference at the Punjab Assembly, emphasized that an investigation was underway to determine the truth behind the claims. “These allegations are part of a smear campaign and are entirely false. We urge the public to wait for the official report from law enforcement agencies before jumping to conclusions,” Buzdar said.
The case has sparked significant public debate, with the university administration also condemning any form of violence or harassment. A statement from LCWU’s Vice-Chancellor reiterated the university’s commitment to providing a safe environment for its students, and announced that they are cooperating fully with authorities investigating the matter.
The student, whose identity has not been disclosed, reportedly filed a complaint earlier this week alleging that she was sexually assaulted by an unidentified individual on campus. The police have yet to confirm the specifics of the case, but sources suggest that they are actively pursuing leads.
The CM’s comments have already ignited a wave of criticism from activists, students, and opposition leaders, who have accused the provincial government of downplaying serious allegations of sexual violence.
As the investigation progresses, many are calling for transparency and accountability from both the government and the university to ensure justice for the victim, regardless of the outcome of the case.
