The Sutlej River near Okara is experiencing a mild flood at Sulemanki Headworks, as water levels dance with nature’s rhythm. Inflows and outflows play a watery symphony, with 69,655 cusecs flowing in and 57,931 cusecs making their way out at Head Sulemanki. At Ganda Singh Wala, the water waltz continues with 55,900 cusecs flowing out, raising the water level to 19 feet.
Recent rains in the river’s catchment areas prompted India to release a generous 2,00,000 cusecs of water downstream to Pakistan. This gushing gesture followed water releases from Harike and Ferozepur waterworks into the Sutlej, painting a picture of cooperative flow.
A flashback to 1988 reminds us of the challenges, as Pakistan weathered devastating floods in the Ravi and Sutlej rivers, impacting crops and livelihoods across thousands of acres.
