Karachi to Sukkur Motorway Project Announced, Emphasizing Public-Private Partnership

Sindh and Federal Governments Redesign M6 Motorway Route: From Karachi to Sukkur via Hyderabad

In a significant development, the Sindh and federal governments have agreed to construct the M6 Motorway from Karachi to Sukkur, with a route that includes Hyderabad, rather than the initially proposed route from Hyderabad to Sukkur. This decision was made during a meeting between Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah and Federal Minister of Communication Aleem Khan at the Chief Minister’s House on Thursday.

The official statement from the Sindh CM House indicated that both leaders discussed the possibility of developing the motorway through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) or by forming a consortium comprising both provincial and federal governments. CM Murad expressed his commitment to exploring various options to facilitate the project.

The M6 Motorway is set to span 306 kilometers and will feature six lanes, providing an access-controlled toll road aimed at enhancing transportation efficiency and safety. The motorway will commence from Hyderabad and terminate at the Naro Canal.

Notably, a previous PPP agreement for the construction of the M6 was signed with a private consortium in December 2022. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, the project did not progress, leading to the cancellation of the partnership.

During the meeting, Minister Aleem Khan proposed that the project be initiated from Karachi via Hyderabad to Sukkur to better accommodate port traffic, a suggestion that CM Murad readily accepted.

Additionally, the leaders discussed the potential formation of a consortium for the project, with both governments sharing equal responsibility. CM Murad assured that his team would review the proposal and respond accordingly.

The meeting also covered various infrastructural matters, including the upgrading of the Lyari Expressway, addressing NOC issues regarding the Link Road interchange, road improvements from Gharo to Keti Bundar, and the condition of the road from Thatta to Keenjhar. Further discussions included the Ghotki-Kandhkot bridge project, the construction of Thul Link Road, and the pending completion of the Jamshoro-Sehwan Road.
