Aqsa Arif, a dedicated PhD student from the LEJ Nanotechnology Centre at the HEJ Research Institute of Chemistry, University of Karachi, has earned the poster prize in the Good Health and Wellbeing (SDG 3) category at the 5th Commonwealth Chemistry Posters – Building Networks to Address the Goals virtual event. The competition, featuring participants from 28 countries, highlighted Arif’s significant research contribution to sustainable global health initiatives.
The event, conducted in September 2024 by Commonwealth Chemistry and the Federation of Chemical Sciences Societies, UK, showcased over 180 abstracts from international scholars. An ICCBS spokesperson confirmed on Tuesday that Arif is pursuing her doctorate under the mentorship of Dr. Mujeeb-ur-Rehman at the University of Karachi’s esteemed HEJ Research Institute.
Arif’s award-winning research, “Prodrugs of Methylprednisolone Nanoparticles: Effective Anti-Inflammatory, Antioxidant, and Analgesic Agents,” was praised for its innovative approach to developing nanoparticles for targeted drug delivery. This work focuses on Methylprednisolone, an FDA-approved treatment for conditions such as arthritis and asthma. The panel recognised its potential in enhancing therapeutic outcomes while contributing to the UN’s health-related Sustainable Development Goals.
In addition to a certificate of recognition, Arif was awarded a £200 cash prize.
The achievement drew commendations from prominent figures. Prof. Dr. Farzana Shaheen, Director of ICCBS, lauded Arif and her supervisor, Dr. Mujeeb-ur-Rehman, for their remarkable work, underlining the rising international stature of Pakistani scientific talent. The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Karachi, Prof. Dr. Khalid Mehmood Iraqi, and Prof. Dr. Atta-ur-Rahman, Professor Emeritus and former Federal Minister for Science and Technology, also extended their heartfelt congratulations to the young researcher.
