For the past few weeks, 27-year-old Tabarak Rehman has been running 40 to 45 kilometers daily to raise awareness about children’s right to education in Pakistan. Despite no prior marathon experience, Rehman embarked on this ambitious cross-country journey on November 3, aiming to raise $1 million to educate Pakistan’s out-of-school children in collaboration with The Citizens Foundation (TCF).
TCF, a renowned non-profit organization, has already made significant strides with over 2,033 school units, impacting 301,000 students nationwide. Rehman’s 1,600 km route stretches from Cadet College Hasan Abdal to IBA University in Karachi, and he plans to complete it within 35 days.
Highlighting Pakistan’s Education Crisis
Pakistan faces a dire education crisis with 36% of its 71 million school-age children not attending school. Economic, cultural, and infrastructural barriers exacerbate the issue. Through his efforts, Rehman aims to support the education of at least 7,000 students.
“Education is the great equalizer,” Rehman remarked, recalling how his upbringing in rural Punjab and his father’s establishment of local schools inspired him to contribute to this cause.
The Journey
Rehman’s routine involves waking at dawn, running till dusk, and navigating challenges like pollution, extreme weather, traffic, and even stray animals. Supported by a dedicated team of 10-12 members, his run is meticulously planned, including rolling schedules for supporters to join.
Despite the physical toll, Rehman finds motivation in the human connections he encounters, such as a 10-year-old girl donating her savings to his cause.
A Call to Action
Rehman’s story is a testament to resilience and purpose. By combining his finance background and personal passion, he hopes to inspire others to take up similar initiatives. As he runs, he continues to raise funds and awareness through social media, inviting everyone to contribute to a brighter future for Pakistan’s children.
His message: “Have a game plan, but be flexible. And always remember—it’s a team effort.”
