Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Shehla Raza has claimed that former DG ISI Lt Gen (retd) Faiz Hameed contacted former President Asif Ali Zardari with a proposal to make him the new Chief of Army Staff. She made the remarks during an appearance on Geo News’ program Capital Talk.
Shehla Raza stated that Faiz Hameed presented a long-term plan during the contact. “Faiz Hameed had also approached Asif Zardari to become the army chief,” she said.
She further elaborated on political matters, highlighting that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has softened its stance regarding the 26th constitutional amendment but is now insisting on the formation of a commission specifically to investigate the events of May 9 and November 26.
Touching on governance issues, Raza criticized the absence of regular meetings of the Council of Common Interests (CCI), stating, “Three meetings of the CCI should have been held, but not one was called.” She also expressed concerns over decisions affecting water distribution, particularly the extraction of canals from the Indus River, which she claimed were made without consulting the PPP.
Charges Against Lt Gen (retd) Faiz Hameed
The former ISI chief is currently facing a Field General Court Martial (FGCM) on serious charges, including engaging in political activities, violating the Official Secrets Act, compromising national security, and misusing authority and government resources.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) confirmed the FGCM proceedings, assuring that Faiz Hameed is being afforded all legal rights during the trial. Additionally, a separate inquiry is underway to investigate his alleged involvement in violent incidents, including those linked to the unrest of May 9.
This development marks a significant moment in the accountability of high-ranking officials accused of political interference and actions undermining national stability.
