In response to the forecasts and directives issued by the Flood Forecast Division, a coordinated effort by government departments has led to the successful evacuation of over 76,000 residents, encompassing men, women, and children, from regions adjacent to the Sutlej River within the Bahawalpur Division.
The Sutlej River has witnessed a surge in water levels, ranging from medium to high flood levels, due to an increased discharge of water from India into the river. This inflow has prompted the Flood Forecast Division, the Pakistan Meteorological Department, and the government to issue a significant flood warning for the Sutlej River.
According to the latest hydro-meteorological assessments, it is anticipated that the Sutlej River at Ganda Singh Wala and downstream areas will experience a rise in water levels, potentially leading to a medium to high flood situation.
Ehtesham Anwar, the Commissioner of Bahawalpur Division, emphasized the ongoing commitment of the divisional management to the evacuation efforts. He highlighted the continuous and round-the-clock endeavors to transfer residents from the villages located in proximity to the banks of the Sutlej River. The districts of Bahawalnagar and Bahawalpur, along with other affected areas, have been the focus of evacuation initiatives.
Anwar underlined the critical importance of ensuring the safety of both people and their livestock during this flood crisis. In light of the dire flood situation, the government has taken measures to facilitate the relocation of cattle to secure areas, minimizing potential losses for residents.
Rescue and relief operations have been established in regions adjacent to the Sutlej River, where emergency aid is readily available to those affected by the flood-like conditions. These camps have been strategically set up to swiftly respond to any distress signals and provide assistance to individuals facing the brunt of the flooding.
As the situation continues to unfold, local authorities are collaborating with residents and various agencies to ensure the safety and well-being of those at risk. The coordination between different government bodies, emergency response teams, and local communities underscores the commitment to safeguarding lives and minimizing the impact of the floodwaters from the Sutlej River.
