In a surprising turn of events, three major political parties in Pakistan – the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PMLN), and Awami National Party (ANP) – have jointly called for the resignation of President Dr. Arif Alvi. The demand comes in response to President Alvi’s recent statement regarding the signing of two crucial bills, which has raised doubts about his capacity to fulfill the responsibilities of his office.
Faisal Karim Kundi, the spokesperson for PPP, expressed his disappointment over the President’s actions, particularly the delayed apology issued 24 hours after media reports confirmed the signing of the bills. Kundi criticized President Alvi’s lack of awareness about the developments and those around him, deeming him unfit for the position.
PPP Vice President Sherry Rehman went further by questioning the President’s claim that he was unaware of the bill signings. Rehman pointedly asked whether President Alvi was implying that someone else signed the bills without his knowledge. She declared that if such were the case, it would be best for the President to step down.
Senator Mian Raza Rabbani advocated for a thorough investigation under constitutional and legal frameworks to determine President Alvi’s culpability for misrepresenting the facts. He proposed a committee of Senate members to conduct an inquiry into the matter, demanding that both the President and his relevant staff appear before the Senate.
PPP Secretary General Nayyer Hussain Bokhari took a different approach, suggesting that President Alvi’s recent tweet raised concerns about his mental well-being. Bokhari called for a medical examination to assess the President’s mental condition, asserting that the tweet was indicative of instability.
Former finance minister and PMLN Senator Ishaq Dar took to social media to express disbelief over President Alvi’s statement. Dar demanded the President’s resignation in light of the controversy.
ANP Provincial President Aimal Wali Khan criticized President Alvi for making a controversial and irresponsible statement that tarnished the prestige of his office. Khan questioned the President’s control over his own staff, suggesting that his inability to manage them cast doubt on his leadership.
The joint stance of these major political parties has intensified pressure on President Dr. Arif Alvi. As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen whether the President will address these demands and restore stability to his presidency.
