In a landmark initiative to improve road safety and promote eco-friendly transportation, the Lahore city administration has officially launched dedicated lanes for bikers and cyclists across major thoroughfares. The project aims to provide safer commuting options for two-wheeler users while reducing traffic congestion and air pollution in Pakistan’s second-largest city.
The initiative, part of Lahore’s broader urban transport development plan, has designated marked lanes in high-traffic areas such as The Mall, Canal Road, and Main Boulevard. These lanes are equipped with proper signage and barriers to ensure safety and compliance.
Speaking at the inauguration, Lahore Commissioner Muhammad Ali Randhawa said, “This is a step towards making Lahore a more inclusive and sustainable city. These lanes will encourage the use of bicycles and motorcycles while protecting the rights of their users.”
Citizens and environmentalists have welcomed the move, viewing it as a step forward in addressing the city’s pollution and traffic challenges. However, many stress the need for strict enforcement to prevent encroachment by cars and rickshaws.
The government plans to expand the project to other parts of the city, with an emphasis on promoting cycling as a healthy and eco-friendly alternative to motorized transport.
