The formal trial for the May 9 attack on the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi began today, as the prosecution presented critical eyewitness testimony and evidence during a hearing held at Adiala Jail. Imran Khan, founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), attended the proceedings.
Judge Amjad Ali Shah presided over the hearing, where four eyewitnesses from the Rawalpindi police – ASI Saqib, Constables Shakil, Sajjad, and Yasir – gave their statements. The witnesses shared significant evidence that had been seized from the accused, including a helmet allegedly taken from anti-riot forces, petrol bombs, fragments of statues damaged during the attack, and mobile phones.
Additional items presented as evidence included sticks, flags, PTI caps, matches, and wires. Notably, one mobile phone was discovered during the hearing itself.
The witnesses identified several accused individuals, with Raja Basharat, who was present in the courtroom, being pointed out as a key figure. One witness testified that Basharat had led the protests outside the GHQ and incited the protestors to retaliate against the military following Imran Khan’s arrest.
The courtroom was filled with accused individuals, lawyers, prosecution members, and media representatives, creating a tense atmosphere. There were heated exchanges between defense lawyers and the prosecution team, prompting the court to use a sound system to ensure the testimonies could be properly recorded. The court also issued warnings to maintain order due to disruptions from the accused. Throughout the proceedings, Imran Khan remained in attendance.
The court has summoned five additional prosecution witnesses for the next hearing, which will take place on January 18. The trial is set to continue with further witness testimonies and the presentation of additional evidence.
