Karachi: The price of sugar has surged by Rs10 per kilogram in Karachi ahead of Ramazan, with insiders confirming the increase on Tuesday.
Over the past two weeks, the wholesale price has climbed to Rs146 per kilogram, while the retail price has risen to Rs150 per kilogram.
This surge comes despite assurances from Minister for Industries and Production, Rana Tanveer Hussain, who recently stated that sugar prices would not be allowed to increase during the holy month.
During a meeting in Islamabad on Friday to review sugar pricing, Hussain emphasized the government’s commitment to providing relief to consumers during Ramazan. He noted that sugar millers had been given a week to consult on pricing, with final rates expected to be announced on Thursday.
The minister also stressed the importance of profit-sharing with farmers, urging sugar millers to support agriculturists in overcoming financial and production challenges.
The increase in sugar prices has raised concerns among consumers, as Ramazan is a time of high demand for essential commodities. Authorities are expected to take further measures to stabilize the market in the coming days.
