Ramadan, the sacred month of fasting, is a time of spiritual purification, self-discipline, and devotion. However, many unknowingly develop habits that can negatively impact their fast and overall well-being. Here are ten common mistakes to avoid for a healthier and more fulfilling Ramadan:

1. Skipping Suhoor

Many skip Suhoor (pre-dawn meal) due to sleep or just drink water, which can lead to weakness and dehydration. Suhoor is a Sunnah and essential for maintaining energy throughout the day.

2. Overeating at Iftar

Consuming excessive food, especially fried and spicy items, can strain the stomach and cause digestive problems. A balanced, light meal is recommended for Iftar.

3. Not Drinking Enough Water

Dehydration is common in Ramadan due to inadequate water intake. Drinking at least 8-10 glasses of water between Iftar and Suhoor is essential. Avoid excessive tea, coffee, and soft drinks, as they contribute to dehydration.

4. Sleeping Excessively

Many people alter their sleep patterns, staying awake all night and sleeping all day. This disrupts the body’s natural rhythm and can lead to fatigue and sluggishness. Maintaining a balanced sleep schedule is crucial.

5. Consuming Unhealthy Foods at Suhoor and Iftar

Relying on processed, fried, or spicy foods can cause digestive discomfort. Instead, opt for protein-rich foods, fiber, fruits, yogurt, and vegetables for better digestion and sustained energy.

6. Sleeping Immediately After Iftar

Going to bed right after Iftar can lead to acid reflux and indigestion. A short walk or light physical activity is advisable to aid digestion.

7. Arguing, Anger, and Using Harsh Language

Fasting is not only about abstaining from food but also about self-control. Anger, quarrelling, and harsh speech should be avoided in favor of patience, kindness, and forgiveness.

8. Excessive Consumption of Caffeinated Drinks

Too much caffeine from tea, coffee, or soda can cause dehydration by reducing water retention in the body. Fresh juices, lemon water, and plain water are healthier alternatives.

9. Neglecting Exercise

While some stop exercising completely, others engage in intense workouts while fasting. Light exercises or walking after Iftar help maintain physical health without overexertion.

10. Delaying or Avoiding Charity and Zakat

Ramadan is a month of generosity, yet some delay or neglect Zakat and charity. Giving to those in need not only fulfills religious obligations but also enhances personal spiritual growth.

By avoiding these common mistakes, individuals can ensure a healthier and more spiritually fulfilling Ramadan experience.
