KARACHI: The city administration launched a strict crackdown against profiteers on the first day of Ramadan, imposing fines totaling over Rs. 1.5 million on violators across various districts. Officials also arrested 14 individuals and sealed 18 shops for overcharging and violating price regulations.
According to reports, the highest fines were imposed in District South (Rs. 692,000), District East (Rs. 471,000), and District Korangi (Rs. 296,000). Other districts, including Keamari, West, and Central, also saw penalties ranging from Rs. 19,000 to Rs. 80,000.
The crackdown comes in response to widespread complaints from citizens about soaring prices of essential commodities, particularly fruits, vegetables, and grocery items. Despite official price lists issued by the government, vendors were found charging double the usual rates.
Authorities have urged citizens to report profiteering incidents to the Commissioner’s Office control room at 021-99205634 and 021-99203443. The Karachi administration has vowed to continue the strict monitoring throughout Ramadan to ensure fair pricing and prevent exploitation of consumers.
