At least one person has died, and around 180 others are missing after two boats carrying migrants capsized off the coasts of Yemen and Djibouti, officials reported on Friday.
According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the boats were overloaded with migrants, primarily from the Horn of Africa, attempting to cross the treacherous waters of the Gulf of Aden in search of better opportunities. The vessels sank earlier this week due to rough sea conditions.
Rescue operations are underway, but hopes of finding survivors are fading as time passes. Authorities fear the death toll could rise significantly. The IOM has called for urgent action to address the risks migrants face on such dangerous routes.
This tragic incident highlights the ongoing humanitarian crisis, with thousands of people risking their lives each year to escape conflict, poverty, and instability in their home countries.
