Renowned actor Javeria Saud has come to the defense of former Pakistan cricket captain Sarfaraz Ahmed after he was questioned about his English-speaking skills during a live Ramadan transmission on a private TV channel.
During the show, a caller asked Sarfaraz, “Why do you seem nervous while speaking English?” Before the cricketer could respond, Javeria immediately interjected, emphasizing the importance of Pakistan’s national language.
“Even I get nervous when speaking English because we are Pakistanis, and our national language is Urdu,” she asserted. She further stressed that “First, we should learn to speak Urdu correctly. Many of us don’t, and speaking English is not something to take pride in.”
Javeria pointed out that people worldwide prioritize their own languages and often feel uncomfortable when spoken to in English.
Sarfaraz then explained why he sometimes struggles with English, saying, “We are not used to speaking English regularly, which makes us nervous. A live show is not as easy as people think.”
Recalling a personal experience, the former captain shared a memory from the 2006 Under-19 World Cup final against India in Sri Lanka. He revealed that while he was confident about the match itself, he was more anxious about speaking at the toss because it was being broadcast live.
Despite these challenges, Sarfaraz acknowledged that confidence grows with experience and that such moments are simply part of the journey.
