In a bid to manage overcrowding and preserve the natural beauty of Japan’s iconic Mount Fuji, authorities have announced that hikers will now be required to pay a fee of 4,000 yen (approximately $27) to access all trails leading up the mountain.
The decision comes as local officials struggle with the increasing number of tourists, which has led to environmental degradation, littering, and safety concerns. Previously, some trails had voluntary donation-based fees, but with the new mandatory charge, authorities aim to improve trail maintenance, safety measures, and conservation efforts.
Hiking season on Mount Fuji typically runs from early July to early September. With this new regulation, authorities hope to ensure a more sustainable and responsible trekking experience for visitors.
