LAHORE – In a major push towards water conservation, the Punjab government has notified 2,557 car wash stations across the province to install water recycling systems, with 159 already sealed for non-compliance.
According to the Punjab Environment Protection Department (EPD), these measures are part of a broader initiative to tackle the growing water scarcity crisis in the region. Car wash stations, which consume vast quantities of fresh water daily, have been given clear directives to adopt recycling systems to minimize wastage.
Officials confirmed that despite multiple warnings and deadlines, 159 car wash stations continued operations without the mandated recycling units, prompting enforcement teams to seal them under environmental laws.
“Water conservation is no longer optional — it’s a necessity. Businesses must adapt and play their part,” said an EPD spokesperson.
The department has vowed to continue strict monitoring and take action against violators, emphasizing that protecting natural resources is a shared responsibility.
This drive follows increasing public concern over depleting groundwater levels in Punjab, where excessive and unchecked water usage remains a major environmental challenge.
