Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday lauded United States President Donald Trump for his successful diplomatic efforts in brokering a ceasefire agreement between arch-rivals India and Pakistan.
Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad, PM Shehbaz said, “President Trump has demonstrated true statesmanship. His efforts to bring both India and Pakistan to the negotiation table have shown that he is a man of peace.”
The ceasefire agreement, reportedly facilitated behind closed doors with U.S. mediation, comes after weeks of heightened tensions along the Line of Control (LoC), where both nations exchanged fire in recent clashes.
PM Shehbaz emphasized that regional peace and stability are vital for economic development in South Asia. “This agreement is a step forward toward reducing hostilities and opening doors for future dialogue,” he added.
While neither New Delhi nor Washington has issued a formal statement confirming the U.S. role, sources in the foreign ministry credit Trump’s administration with behind-the-scenes diplomacy that led to the breakthrough.
This is not the first time President Trump has expressed interest in mediating between the two nuclear-armed neighbors. During his previous term, he had offered to facilitate dialogue on the Kashmir issue—a move welcomed by Pakistan but rejected by India.
The international community has largely welcomed the news, with the United Nations urging both countries to maintain the ceasefire and resume formal peace talks.
