In a major move to preserve cultural heritage and boost tourism, the Punjab government has allocated Rs 2.9 billion for the restoration of seven historic forts in the Cholistan Desert. The announcement was made by South Punjab Additional Chief Secretary Fuad Hashim Rabbani.
According to officials, an initial amount of Rs 1.89 billion will be released immediately to begin restoration work, with Derawar Fort being the first in line. The other forts included in this phase are Jamgarh, Meergarh, Maujgarh, Deengarh, Phulra, and Marot.
The initiative is part of a broader Rs 4 billion development package focused on promoting tourism, preserving heritage sites, and supporting eco-friendly infrastructure in South Punjab. This includes additional projects such as the development of eco-tourism zones in Lal Sohanra National Park, Fort Munro, and along the Indus River.
Officials also stated that 20 more forts in Cholistan are planned to be restored in later phases of the initiative.
