ISLAMABAD – The federal capital is set to undergo a major security upgrade as authorities plan to install over 3,000 new surveillance cameras under the Safe City Project. The initiative aims to enhance citywide monitoring, improve public safety, and curb criminal activities through advanced technology.
With this addition, the total number of cameras across Islamabad will rise to more than 5,500, significantly expanding coverage in areas that were previously under-monitored, including sectors G-13 to G-16, I-14 to I-16, and regions like Barakahu, Sangjani, and Rawat.
The new surveillance system will feature AI-powered capabilities, including facial recognition, automatic number plate recognition (ANPR), and real-time traffic monitoring. Authorities are also upgrading existing infrastructure by adding high-powered servers and modern fiber-optic cabling to support seamless data transmission and video analytics.
Officials revealed that AI cameras have already played a key role in the identification and arrest of several criminal gangs in the city. The upcoming expansion is expected to bring nearly 100% of Islamabad under secure digital surveillance by mid-2026.
The project is part of a broader plan to modernize Islamabad’s law enforcement and traffic systems, ensuring quicker emergency responses and a safer environment for residents.
