ISLAMABAD — In a significant step toward energy efficiency and sustainability, Pakistan Railways has reported savings of nearly Rs 1 billion in electricity costs over the past eight months by shifting to solar power at key installations.
Officials said the solarization initiative has been rolled out at major railway stations, offices, and operational sites, reducing dependency on the national grid and slashing utility bills. The move is also expected to lower the organization’s carbon footprint while ensuring uninterrupted power supply.
Railways authorities highlighted that the project is part of broader reforms aimed at modernizing the sector and making operations more financially viable. They added that the savings will be reinvested into improving passenger facilities and upgrading infrastructure.
Experts have welcomed the development, noting that the adoption of renewable energy in state institutions is a positive step toward reducing Pakistan’s overall energy crisis.
