New Delhi, October 8, 2025 — In a groundbreaking innovation for the electric mobility sector, an Indian electric vehicle (EV) company has unveiled the world’s first driverless rickshaw, marking a major leap in the country’s push toward smart, sustainable, and autonomous transportation.
The prototype, powered by AI-based navigation and advanced LiDAR sensors, was showcased in Bengaluru earlier this week. The vehicle is designed to operate autonomously in busy urban areas while ensuring passenger safety and energy efficiency.
“This innovation represents India’s entry into the global autonomous mobility race,” said a company spokesperson. “Our goal is to make daily commuting smarter, safer, and eco-friendly — especially for developing cities where rickshaws remain the backbone of local transport.”
The driverless rickshaw can carry up to three passengers, features collision-avoidance technology, and runs on a fully electric battery system capable of delivering a range of up to 120 kilometers per charge. The vehicle can be summoned via a smartphone app and automatically identifies pickup and drop-off points using real-time GPS data.
Industry experts believe this development could revolutionize urban transportation across South Asia, reducing traffic congestion and emissions while creating new opportunities in tech-driven mobility solutions.
The company plans to begin pilot testing in select Indian cities in 2026, with commercial deployment expected by 2028, pending regulatory approvals.
