Gujranwala, Pakistan – November 4, 2025: The city of Gujranwala recorded an alarming Air Quality Index (AQI) of 762, the highest in the country this season, as dense smog engulfed large parts of Punjab on Monday night and Tuesday morning.
Residents reported near-zero visibility, disrupted traffic, and breathing difficulties as air pollution levels reached what experts described as “severely hazardous.” Major cities including Lahore, Faisalabad, and Sheikhupura also reported AQI levels above 400, prompting renewed health warnings.
Environmental authorities attributed the worsening air quality to industrial emissions, crop residue burning, and stagnant weather conditions. Schools in several districts are expected to remain closed, while hospitals have reported a spike in cases of respiratory and eye irritation.
The Punjab government said emergency measures are being considered, including temporary shutdowns of factories and restrictions on vehicle movement. Experts have urged the public to stay indoors, wear N95 masks, and avoid outdoor exercise until air quality improves.
