Richmond, November 5, 2025: Ghazala Hashmi, a Democratic candidate and longtime Virginia state senator, has made history by becoming the first Muslim woman ever elected as the Lieutenant Governor of Virginia.
According to official results, Hashmi secured a decisive victory in Tuesday’s election, marking a significant milestone in U.S. political history and further expanding Muslim representation in American public office.
Born in Hyderabad, India, Hashmi moved to the United States as a student and later built a distinguished career in academia before entering politics. She first gained national attention in 2019 when she became the first Muslim woman elected to the Virginia Senate.
In her victory speech, Hashmi said, “This win is not just mine — it belongs to every woman, every immigrant, and every young person who dares to dream of public service.”
Political analysts say her election reflects Virginia’s evolving demographics and the growing political engagement of Muslim Americans nationwide.
