CHENNAI: As Cyclone Michaung intensifies in the Bay of Bengal, authorities in southern India have implemented a series of precautionary measures to ensure the safety of residents. The cyclonic storm is expected to make landfall on the coast of the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh within the next 24 hours, accompanied by torrential rains and strong winds.
The Indian Meteorological Department has predicted sustained winds of 90-100 kph (56-62 mph) with gusts reaching up to 110 kph. In response, officials in Andhra Pradesh and neighbouring Tamil Nadu have taken swift action, closing schools and offices, suspending flight operations, and initiating the evacuation of coastal areas.
Andhra Pradesh, particularly vulnerable to the cyclone’s impact, has already evacuated nearly 7,000 people in eight coastal districts. Authorities are prepared to evacuate an additional 28,000 individuals, contingent on the path and severity of Cyclone Michaung, according to a senior official in the state’s disaster management department.
In Tamil Nadu, a public holiday has been declared in four coastal districts, and residents of Chennai, the state’s capital, have been advised to refrain from unnecessary outdoor activities. Chennai airport temporarily suspended operations for two hours on Monday morning due to heavy rainfall in the city. Reports indicate that several flights were either canceled or diverted to alternate airports.
Fishermen in the region have been warned against venturing out into the sea, emphasizing the potential dangers posed by the approaching cyclone. The authorities are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating efforts to mitigate the impact of Cyclone Michaung, ensuring the safety and well-being of the affected population.
