Incarcerated Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan’s nomination papers for the National Assembly’s NA-89 constituency of Mianwali, Punjab, were submitted on Friday. PTI leader Seemabia Tahir took the responsibility of filing Khan’s papers in his home constituency, as reported by various sources.
The announcement of the submission was made by Tahir on [X], and several accounts affiliated with the party shared images of the nomination papers of the former PTI chief. Imran Khan has been in custody since his arrest on August 5, following a court’s verdict finding him guilty of selling state gifts during his government.
Despite the suspension of his three-year sentence by another court, Khan faces arrest in multiple cases, including the cypher case. In a recent development, the top court approved the bail petitions of Imran Khan and his ex-foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi in the cypher case. A three-member Supreme Court bench, led by acting Chief Justice of Pakistan Sardar Tariq Masood and comprising Justice Athar Minallah and Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, heard the case.
A day prior to this development, PTI approached the apex court seeking a level playing field in the upcoming general elections in 2024. The party raised concerns about reported hurdles in filing nomination papers and, through lawyer Shoaib Shaheen, named federal and provincial governments, as well as the Election Commission of Pakistan, as respondents in the petition.
Imran Khan’s political journey takes a new twist as legal battles unfold alongside preparations for the upcoming elections, marking a crucial phase for both the former PTI chief and the party he founded.
