In a bid to enhance connectivity and digital access, the Punjab government has reignited its free Wi-Fi initiative across public areas. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s recent announcement has set the wheels in motion, signaling a return to the project initially launched by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) in 2013.
The Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) has been tasked with overseeing this ambitious endeavor. Their mandate includes revamping existing Wi-Fi infrastructure while also installing new hotspots. The project’s primary objective is to ensure seamless internet access in vital locations such as schools, hospitals, bus stops, and train stations. Additionally, the PITB will scout for new venues to expand the reach of these Wi-Fi hotspots.
Originally spearheaded by the PML-N, the free Wi-Fi service was abruptly halted during the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) administration. Under the PTCL’s jurisdiction initially, the responsibility for this initiative now shifts to the PITB, marking a fresh chapter in public internet access.
By reinstating free Wi-Fi services, the Punjab government aims to empower individuals with enhanced digital access, fostering a more connected and technologically inclusive society.
