During the Eid ul Adha holidays, more than 1,200 people were hospitalized across Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa due to excessive eating and related ailments, highlighting a health concern amidst festive celebrations.
In Peshawar alone, 610 cases of gastroenteritis were reported within 24 hours, with health officials attributing the surge to overeating and excessive consumption of meat. Mohammad Asim, spokesperson for Lady Reading Hospital, noted that alongside gastrointestinal issues, injuries from animal collisions were also recorded. Furthermore, approximately 500 individuals were admitted due to traffic accidents during the same period in the city.
Across Punjab, six major public hospitals registered a total of 2,200 patients during the Eid holidays. Among these cases, 180 were linked to gastroenteritis, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Jinnah Hospital in Lahore handled over 130 patients, while Services Hospital, Ganga Ram Hospital, and Mayo Hospital each treated more than 100 cases related to overindulgence.
Medical experts have cautioned the public to consume meat in moderation and avoid excessive eating during Eid ul Adha celebrations to prevent health complications. The spike in hospitalizations underscores the importance of responsible eating habits during festive occasions.
This health advisory comes as authorities continue to monitor and respond to medical emergencies arising from the holiday festivities across the region.
