In a landmark decision, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed that Rohit Sharma will remain at the helm of India’s Test and one-day international teams following his retirement from T20 internationals. The announcement comes on the heels of India’s T20 World Cup victory, where Rohit led the team to glory, securing the nation’s first global title since 2013.
The 37-year-old batsman, along with Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja, bid farewell to T20 cricket after a victorious campaign culminating in a thrilling final against South Africa in Barbados. The match also marked the conclusion of Rahul Dravid’s tenure as head coach.
“After this victory, the next stage is the 2025 World Test Championship final and the Champions Trophy,” stated Jay Shah, BCCI Secretary, in a video message. “I am truly confident that we will win both the tournaments under the leadership of Rohit Sharma.”
Shah commended the contributions of Rohit, Kohli, and Jadeja, as well as the outgoing coach Dravid, highlighting India’s recent achievements in global cricket finals.
“This was our third final in the last year alone,” Shah noted, referencing India’s appearances in the ODI World Cup and the World Test Championship.
Looking ahead, India’s focus shifts to the upcoming challenges, including the ODI Champions Trophy slated for February-March 2025 in Pakistan, amid ongoing geopolitical tensions. The World Test Championship cycle will culminate in June 2025 at Lord’s in London, with India aiming to improve upon their runner-up finishes in recent editions.
Rohit Sharma took on the reins of India’s limited-overs captaincy in 2021 and assumed leadership across all formats a year later, marking a significant phase in Indian cricket under his stewardship.
