Lahore, July 23, 2024 — The Government of Punjab has greenlit the implementation of Lahore’s inaugural tram service, marking a significant step towards enhancing the city’s urban landscape and improving public transportation. The newly approved tram service will cover an 11-kilometer route, connecting vital hubs such as Liberty, Main Market, Mini Market, and Hali Road, with stops strategically spaced at intervals of approximately 1 to 1.5 kilometers.
Designed to mirror successful tram systems in Finland and China, the modern trams are expected to offer commuters a blend of comfort and style, revolutionizing the city’s transit experience. The Lahore Development Authority has underscored that the project aims not only to streamline urban mobility but also to elevate Lahore’s visual appeal. Plans are underway to rejuvenate MM Alam Road through remodeling and beautification efforts, featuring uniform roads and tuff tiles to create a cohesive streetscape.
The project’s scope extends beyond the tram route, encompassing extensive construction, renovation, and rehabilitation initiatives across Gulberg and its neighboring areas. This holistic approach ensures seamless integration with Lahore’s existing infrastructure, promising a comprehensive transportation solution for residents.
In conjunction with the tram service, Punjab Chief Minister has also sanctioned the development of a signal-free corridor stretching from Kareem Block to the Motorway, aimed at further easing traffic congestion in the bustling metropolis. Although the official launch date remains undisclosed, authorities have prioritized swift project completion to swiftly deliver its benefits to residents.
Ticket pricing details will be finalized closer to the project’s completion, with authorities keen to offer an affordable yet efficient transport option for Lahore’s populace. This milestone development underscores Lahore’s evolution as a beacon of innovation and progress, positioning the city for a future of enhanced connectivity and aesthetic appeal.
