Islamabad, August 11, 2024 — Olympian Arshad Nadeem returned to Pakistan early Sunday morning to an exuberant reception following his gold medal victory in javelin throw at the Paris Olympics.
Arriving on a slightly delayed Turkish Airlines flight, Nadeem was met with a spectacular welcome. A shower of flower petals rained down as drumbeats resonated through the airport, and enthusiastic fans chanted patriotic slogans in celebration of his triumph. The flight was honored with a water cannon salute as it touched down.
Prominent figures including Federal Planning and Development Minister Ahsan Iqbal, Prime Minister Youth Program Chairman Rana Mashhood, Minister of State for IT and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima, and Khawaja Saad Rafique were present at the airport to welcome the hero.
In a heartfelt interview, Nadeem expressed deep gratitude for the nation’s unwavering support, acknowledging the crucial role played by his coach, Salman Butt. He also thanked his physician, Dr. Ali Sher Bajwa, the Pakistan and Punjab sports boards, and Akram Sahi, former president of the Athletics Federation of Pakistan.
Reflecting on his journey, Nadeem spoke about overcoming an elbow injury that had impeded his performance at the Tokyo Olympics. Despite his strong showing there, the injury had prevented him from achieving his full potential. He credited the relentless support from fans and the critical role of his coach and medical team in his success.
Nadeem also highlighted the significance of his participation in the Diamond League, which he credited for boosting his morale and preparing him effectively for the Paris Games.
The airport buzzed with excitement as Nadeem’s family, relatives, and key figures from the sporting community gathered to celebrate. Among the crowd were his former coach, Fayyaz Bukhari, and fellow javelin thrower Yasir Ali, who won a silver medal at an Asian championship. Ali expressed admiration for Nadeem’s record-breaking achievement and noted its revitalizing effect on the sport in Pakistan.
To commemorate his historic win, a special postage stamp featuring Nadeem’s image has been issued, celebrating his outstanding contribution to the nation.
