Internet services across Pakistan have been severely disrupted for several days, leading to significant inconvenience for users nationwide. The issue is affecting all major internet service providers (ISPs), with notable impacts on social media platforms where users are struggling with issues such as difficulties in downloading audio messages.
While ISPs have attributed the disruptions to problems related to social media platforms, mobile companies have denied any involvement in the issue. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has so far refrained from providing any official comment on the matter.
In the midst of this ongoing situation, the government is moving forward with plans to regulate social media platforms. Documents indicate that a new regulatory framework based on categorization will be implemented once it receives approval from the Federal Cabinet. These regulations will mandate that companies store data within Pakistan and provide location and general information upon request.
Additionally, officials have suggested that ongoing work on a firewall might also be contributing to the internet service disruptions. Sources have indicated that these issues could continue until August 30th, potentially prolonging the inconvenience for users across the country.
