The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has released a sobering report outlining the destruction wrought by heavy monsoon rains across Pakistan from July 1st to August 17th. The report confirms that 189 people have lost their lives due to the relentless rains and subsequent flooding.
Punjab has borne the brunt of the fatalities, with 68 deaths, followed closely by Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, where 65 lives were lost. Sindh reported 32 deaths, while Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir recorded 15, 4, and 5 fatalities, respectively.
In addition to the tragic loss of life, 333 people have been injured, including 137 children and 85 women. The report also details the extensive damage to infrastructure and property. A total of 645 homes have been completely destroyed, while 1,419 homes have sustained partial damage.
The floods have also taken a toll on the country’s education and transportation sectors. Eight schools and 35 bridges have been affected, further disrupting the lives of those in the impacted regions. Moreover, 323 animals perished in the floods, adding to the economic burden faced by many families.
As the country grapples with the aftermath of these devastating monsoon rains, the NDMA continues its efforts to provide relief and support to the affected communities. The agency has urged the public to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions as the monsoon season progresses.
