NEW DELHI – 19 October 2025:
Following a period of strong military and defense performance, India is expected to spend nearly $7.4 billion on fighter jet engine procurement and development over the next ten years, according to defense and industry experts.
The projected spending surge comes amid New Delhi’s ongoing push to modernize its air fleet, with plans to upgrade existing aircraft and accelerate the development of indigenous fighter programs, including the Tejas Mk2 and Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA).
Defense sources indicate that the Indian Air Force (IAF) aims to enhance its combat readiness through new-generation engines capable of delivering higher efficiency, improved thrust, and lower maintenance costs.
The spending forecast follows a string of defense achievements, with military analysts noting that India’s emphasis on air superiority and self-reliance is reshaping its long-term strategic planning.
“This investment reflects India’s determination to strengthen its aerospace capabilities and reduce dependence on foreign suppliers,”
said a defense economist based in New Delhi.
The U.S., France, and the U.K. are among countries competing to supply or co-develop advanced engines with Indian defense firms under technology-sharing agreements.
