Amir Sarfraz Tamba, the man allegedly involved in the killing of Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh in Kot Lakhpat prison in 2013, was critically injured in a targeted attack at his residence on Sunday. Police officials confirmed that Tamba survived the assault but sustained critical injuries.
According to media reports, two masked armed assailants forcefully entered Tamba’s residence in Lahore’s Islampura area on Ganga Street. They proceeded to the upper floor where Tamba was present and fired multiple shots, leaving him severely wounded in a pool of blood.
Upon hearing the gunshots, Tamba’s brother, Junaid Sarfraz, rushed upstairs to find his brother critically injured. The attackers, masked and armed, quickly fled the scene on a Honda 125cc motorbike, evading immediate capture.
Tamba was swiftly transported to a local hospital for emergency treatment. Reports indicate that he suffered three bullet wounds, including two to the chest. The Lahore police were promptly informed of the attack.
The motive behind the assault remains under investigation, with heightened attention on the possibility of foreign involvement, particularly from India. The Punjab government has referred the case to the Counter-Terrorism Department for a thorough investigation.
Tamba’s history is linked to the infamous incident in Kot Lakhpat prison, where he and another inmate attacked Sarabjit Singh. Singh, an Indian national, was serving a death sentence for espionage in Pakistan. Tamba and his accomplice were acquitted in 2018 after witnesses retracted their statements.
The attack on Tamba comes amidst heightened tensions, following recent reports in the UK’s Guardian alleging Indian government involvement in assassinations on foreign soil. Punjab Inspector General Dr. Usman Anwar cautioned against premature conclusions regarding foreign involvement in the attack.
Authorities have escalated security measures in Lahore, including increased checkpoints and heavy deployments at entry and exit points, to track down and apprehend the assailants.
The Punjab government has taken this attack seriously due to its potential implications and has initiated a high-profile investigation to uncover the full details and motives behind the incident.
The story continues to develop as officials work to piece together the events leading up to the attack on Amir Sarfraz Tamba.
