Karachi: The Arif Habib-led consortium has announced plans to significantly expand Pakistan International Airlines’ (PIA) fleet to 64 aircraft following the completion of its Rs135 billion takeover, signaling a major turnaround strategy for the national carrier.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the consortium aims to modernize PIA’s fleet through a mix of new aircraft acquisitions and leasing arrangements, focusing on fuel efficiency and lower operating costs. The expansion is expected to be phased over the next several years, aligned with route rationalization and network growth plans.
Industry analysts say the proposed expansion could help PIA regain market share on key domestic and international routes, particularly in the Middle East, Europe, and regional destinations. The consortium is also expected to prioritize on-time performance, service quality, and financial discipline as part of its restructuring roadmap.
Officials associated with the takeover stated that the Rs135 billion transaction includes assumptions of certain liabilities and commitments to operational reforms. “Fleet expansion is central to restoring competitiveness and long-term viability,” a source said, adding that negotiations with aircraft manufacturers and lessors are already underway.
The government has welcomed the development, viewing private-sector participation as a crucial step toward stabilizing the airline after years of financial losses. Further details on timelines, aircraft types, and financing arrangements are expected to be announced in the coming months.
