Mumbai, India – A man, believed to be a Bangladeshi citizen, was arrested in Mumbai on Sunday and identified as the prime suspect in the stabbing of Bollywood superstar Saif Ali Khan, according to local police.
The attack, which occurred on Thursday during a burglary attempt at Khan’s residence, has sent shockwaves through India’s film industry and raised concerns about the city’s security. Khan, 54, underwent surgery for six stab wounds to his spine, neck, and hands. Doctors confirmed he is now out of danger and has been discharged from the hospital.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Dixit Gedam revealed during a press briefing that the suspect had entered India illegally, adopting the alias Vijay Das. Authorities believe his real name to be Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad. The suspect reportedly arrived in Mumbai five to six months ago and had been working for a housekeeping agency.
The arrest took place on the outskirts of Mumbai. Police will now seek custody of the suspect to further investigate the incident.
“Primary evidence suggests that the accused is a Bangladeshi citizen. He changed his identity upon entering India illegally,” Gedam said.
Authorities had detained a key suspect in Mumbai on Friday and apprehended another individual in Chhattisgarh on Saturday, building a case against those involved in the attack.
The shocking incident has prompted calls for enhanced policing and stricter security measures in Mumbai, particularly for high-profile individuals.
