Islamabad – Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Barrister Gohar, responded to the recent statement by US Special Representative Richard Grenell, affirming that the release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan will be ensured in accordance with Pakistan’s constitution and legal framework.
Speaking at a rally in Swabi, Barrister Gohar emphasized that the PTI would rely solely on the support of the Pakistani people and judiciary for Imran Khan’s release, without requesting assistance from any foreign country. “We thank all those working towards the release of Imran Khan. However, his freedom will be achieved through legal and constitutional means with the participation of the Pakistani people,” he stated.
Grenell, a close confidant of former US President Donald Trump, recently drew attention in Pakistan by demanding the immediate release of the PTI chairman. In a tweet on November 26, coinciding with a late-night crackdown on PTI protesters in Islamabad’s D-Chowk, Grenell said, “Release Imran Khan.”
Speaking to US media a day earlier, Grenell recalled the improved US-Pakistan relations during the Trump administration when Imran Khan led Pakistan. “He was an outsider, a former cricketer who spoke in common-sense language, and he had a very good relationship with Donald Trump,” Grenell noted.
Drawing parallels between Khan’s legal troubles and Trump’s allegations, Grenell remarked, “There are a lot of similar allegations, where the ruling party created corruption charges and false accusations to imprison him.”
Grenell’s remarks have sparked widespread discussions in Pakistan. A prominent figure in Trump’s administration, Grenell served as US Ambassador to Germany, Special Envoy for Serbia and Kosovo Peace Negotiations, and Acting Director of National Intelligence.
Barrister Gohar acknowledged international concerns but reiterated PTI’s stance: “While we appreciate the solidarity, the release of our party’s founder will strictly adhere to Pakistan’s constitutional and legal principles.”
