Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar has addressed recent controversies surrounding the return of PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif and the participation of PTI Chairman Imran Khan in the upcoming elections, emphasizing that decisions will be made in accordance with the law.
Speaking to the media in London on Tuesday, Kakar affirmed that the caretaker government’s actions would strictly adhere to legal procedures. Regarding Nawaz Sharif’s return to Pakistan, the government would examine court permissions and seek the opinion of the Ministry of Law. Kakar stressed that the caretaker government is impartial and operates within the bounds of the constitutional and legal framework, refraining from any bias towards political parties or groups.
Addressing the situation involving Imran Khan’s participation in the election, Kakar clarified that his previous remarks had been misconstrued. He reiterated that the law would determine Imran Khan’s eligibility to participate in the election, emphasizing that these matters were legal, not political. Kakar underlined the importance of upholding the rule of law and the government’s lack of authority to alter legal processes.
In response to questions about his visit to London, Kakar asserted that it should not be politicized, as it had no political agenda. Instead, he held meetings with businessmen, including one interested in investing billions of dollars in Pakistan.
Kakar denied any involvement in deals or negotiations and refuted claims of leniency, explaining that such news was driven by media sensationalism. He also addressed the concerning incident of people losing their vision in Punjab, stating that those responsible for the injection mishap would be identified and punished.
Regarding privatization, Kakar clarified that the decision was made to address institutions’ deficits and avoid bankruptcy due to subsidies. He confirmed that the privatization process for two institutions would proceed as planned.
Separately, the caretaker government issued a statement expressing disappointment with media outlets misinterpreting the prime minister’s recent interview with The Associated Press (AP). The government emphasized the importance of equal political participation rights for all parties in the upcoming general elections and clarified the prime minister’s stance on legal proceedings.
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting released the original text from the AP interview to correct the record. Prime Minister Kakar’s intention was to emphasize the separation between political participation rights and legal action for criminal activities.
Kakar reassured that members of Imran Khan’s party who had not engaged in unlawful activities would be allowed to participate in the political process and elections. The ministry reiterated that the PTI and its leaders were entitled to participate in the elections, with no obstacles in their way.
The statement underscored the principle of equality before the law, emphasizing that the legal process would proceed independently for anyone facing criminal cases. It reaffirmed the caretaker government’s commitment to not interfere with judicial proceedings and citizens’ constitutional right to seek relief through higher judicial forums when necessary.
